My first time playing organized basketball in San Diego 5th grade summer going to 6th grade . I had the privilege to be coach by Joaquim Cruz who at that time I didn’t know he was a Gold medalist in 84 Olympics for the 800m in Track and Field . He is a class act and great all around guy . Very professional and just loved to coach the youth to see them grow

He was haranguing the British press, some of whom had practically written him off in the previous 12 months, following a couple of significant battles with illness and injury. Some questioned his selection for the team, and you have to remember that GB had so many great middle-distance runners at the time that it was arguably more difficult to get picked for the team than it was to win a medal once you were selected! It all created a rather toxic atmosphere between him and the press, which exploded at the end of this race.

This was a very difficult but courageous race for Steve Ovett! He probably exhausted himself profoundly, which - in addition to his smog-induced bronchitis - probably led to his lacklustre performance in the 800-meter Olympic final (8th place in 1:52.28). Yet we should admire his determination to qualify for the Olympic final, and to finish it - although he ran several seconds more slowly than he would have run in his top physical condition.

That's debatable. In the heyday of EPO Morceli used to destroy Elg. Then out of the blue Elg suddenly started to run 2, 3 and then 5 seconds quicker???? Questions have to be asked. No-one in history has improved so much in such a short time at that distance! We know Coe was clean and without illness and injuries we know he would have been miles ahead of anyone. But even with his illnesses and injures he still had the best kick in 1500 metre history. With faster tracks of today and better pace setters he would still have been the man to beat!

What an amazing final. Coe was absolutely superb - one of the GOATS without question. Cram had an astonishing career but I did feel a little sorry with how the Olympics went for him. Too young in 80 against the might of Coe and Ovett, injured all season in 84, and sadly all done by 88 due to career ending injury. He had an undiagnosed issue that was easily fixable with surgery had it been known. Still nothing to be ashamed of - along with Coe, Ovett & Aouita he was one of the greats of this era.

One of the British sports journalists, whose name escapes me, had stated very clearly towards the end of 1983 that Coe was finished as a top athlete, following a lengthy spell of illness and various injuries, and could be safely ignored in any discussions around selection for the 1984 Olympics. He really got on the wrong side of Seb and I'm guessing he was in the press contingent that Coe turned to and roared at, right after the finish of the race.

Lopes made the break early as he knew he couldn't outsprint Hutchings - Storey keeps saying Lopes had a tremendous kick and was "2nd last year" - Lopes was phenomenal but NEVER had a kick in fact and was beaten in the sprint in 1983. This comment is inaccurate -also Lopes hardly ever ran 5km either! Oh well.

I remember this race so well because I was there! This took place at the meadowlands arena in East Rutherford New Jersey (first world cross country championship in the US) This was just at the heights of the cold war, and I remember that the Russian team and the American Team arrived in the same bus. Also, this was the first race where the Kenyan participated in cross country events (Kip Keino was the coach of this team) At the end of the race, I approached Kip Keino for an autograph, but he refused telling me that I should get an autograph from some of his runners since they were going to become world championships. The place was packed, and I was sitting on the stands. The crowd went crazy every time Pat Porter would run by in leading the race. At the end of the race then a large group of the Portuguese crowd (about 40) just went wild and picked up Lopez and parade him around. This was a very glorious moment for the Portuguese community since there was a trial of Portuguese who were accused of raping a woman in a Portuguese bar and this was very difficult and painful for the community. Carlos Lopez was not a tall looking runner, he looked more like a short, or medium size runner (about 120 lbs.) but he was very agile and very efficient in his running style. Many though that he was not going to be a threat at the next year Olympic games (which eventually he won the Marathon in an Olympic record-about 2:09 and something) He was a true underdog but what no one thought about him is that he was a cross country champion in 1976 and a silver medalist in the 10.000 meters at the 1976 Olympic games in Montreal (just behind Lasse Viren) Then he had significant injuries and retired from running (76) and then began running again toward the end of 1982 and the rest is history. For sure one of the greatest (he was good in track, cross country and the marathon), totally forgotten and outside of Portugal totally underrated.
